Olive Borden, virtually unknown today, but rest assured, she was a huge star in her day. A born and bred Virginia girl, teenage Olive persuaded her mom to move to Hollywood to pursue a career in movies. In 1922, our Joy Girl began apprenticing in slapstick comedies. By 1925, she was one of the most popular and highest paid actresses of the era, making $1500 a week. With her trademark jet black hair and vivacious personality, Olive was living the high life; a lifestyle that included mansions, servants, and fur coats galore! But after a contract dispute with Fox Studio in 1927; thus began the slow unraveling of her career. She had a difficult time making the transition from silents to talkies, and completed her last picture in 1934. By the age of 41, she was a penniless alcoholic scrubbing floors in a skid row women's shelter, where she died from a stomach ailment and pneumonia. But let's remember the enjoyment she brought movie goers while at the height of her popularity! (For clips of her work, check out YouTube!)
