Dolores Del Rio, with an extraordinarily beautiful face and abundance of talent, was the first internationally revered Mexican movie star and one of the very few Latina actresses in the Golden Age of Hollywood. With a career that spanned 50 years, Del Rio began in silent movies in 1925, and within a year was on her way to major stardom. By 1930, she had easily transitioned from silents to 'talkies'; with the 1932 film Bird of Paradise catapulting her fame and celebrity status. (This movie was considered quite controversial at the time because of Del Rio's daring costumes.) By the early 1940's, Del Rio returned to her native Mexico, where she achieved her international success, starring in a number of important Mexican films. It was during this time that she was accused of being a communist sympathizer and blacklisted by the U.S. government and denied work in Hollywood. However, 18 years later, Del Rio did return to Hollywood with much fanfare. She appeared in numerous films, tv shows and stage productions. Dolores Del Rio was active in fine arts until her death at age 78 from liver failure.
