Ida Lupino, born into a British show business family, could not fight fate. A star in England by her thirteenth birthday, she was bound to end up in Hollywood while still a teenager; a feisty sophisticated teenager! Ida was signed to Paramount Pictures in 1933 with the plan to turn her into 'the English Jean Harlow'. Unfortunately, Ida was cast in numerous insignificant roles in not so great movies until around 1938; at which time her grit and determination paid off. In 1940, her career soared playing strong, harder edged characters. (Remember, she was still in her early 20's at this time.) In her early 30's, Ida walked away from her acting craft in order to go behind the camera - writing and directing 'socially conscious' films. By the 1950's, Ida was the most prominent female director of the era; expanding her directorial skills to television; directing episodes of The Rifleman, The Twilight Zone, and Bewitched, to name a few. Ida Lupino acted in 59 films, had a 48 year career;
died at the age of 77 from colon cancer. (Stand out films: High Sierra, The Sea Wolfe, They Drive by Night are shown occasionally on TCM.)
