Norma Shearer was a Canadian-American actress who enjoyed star status in Hollywood for two decades. Nominated six times for an Academy Award, dubbed the first lady of MGM studios, (which was THE premier studio, boasting an elite roster of 'more stars than there are in the heavens.') In the beginning, none of these accolades came easy for Norma. She toiled in bit roles throughout the early 1920's being told continuously that her looks were average and her talent was modest, at best. However, sheer determination in learning how to make the most of her physical attributes and perfecting her craft brought her to the attention of MGM; and a certain studio boss who eventually married her. The best movie roles came soon thereafter; as did super stardom. Shearer eventually retired from the screen at the age of 42, but will always carry the distinction of being one of Hollywood's most luminous stars. She died at 80 years of age from pneumonia and Alzheimers.
