Pauline Frederick, not a star that you are likely to see on Turner Classic Movies because most of her films have been lost over the last 90+ years. None the less, I am going to dial it way back and pay homage to this woman who began her career in 1900 as a chorus girl at the age of 17. Having fierce ambition and a lot of moxie, by 1906 she was a well known star of the stage for many years. But - then came the phone call -"Hello, this is
Hollywood..." and off she went. Pauline was already in her early 30's when she made her film debut in 1915. From there she maintained an admirable silent film career, specializing in portraying authoritative women; even making a successful transition to talking pictures in 1929. But oh honey, can we just mention your personal life for a moment? Married five times, made a million bucks in silent pictures, all gone by 1933. But through it all, Pauline retained a dazzling personality that fans and friends alike adored. In 1936, her health went in serious decline after undergoing emergency surgery from an intestinal obstruction, which left her with a serious asthmatic condition. She died at 55 years of age from a fatal asthma attack. Pauline Frederick, forgotten by most, but beloved by many back in the Golden days.
