Bette Davis, with her distinct, clipped vocal style and those "Bette Davis Eyes". (1981, anyone? Big hit song!) She was regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. Always willing to play some of the most unlikeable characters on film, Bette won the Academy Award for best actress twice, and was nominated ten times. A perfectionist, a force to be reckoned with in the business of movies; she advanced in her career without the benefit of obvious beauty. Bette Davis was credited with appearances in over a hundred film, tv and theater roles. She never retired but continued to work until shortly before her death from breast cancer at age 81.
