Barbara Stanwyck lived the quintessential rags to riches story.Orphaned at a younger age, it became clear that she was going to have to support herself. As a teenager she began her show business career as a chorus girl. By 16 years old, she was performing in the famous Ziegfeld Follies. It was not long before Hollywood came knockin'. Stanwyck had a 60 year career in film and tv, and was best known for her strong female roles. Nominated four times for an Academy Award, Stanwyck also found great success in television. (The Big Valley and The Thornbirds, in particular.) Although in her later years, she was known to be reclusive off stage; she reportedly devoted her life to friends and her craft. Her work was her identity. Barbara Stanwyck, who never gave a bad performance, ever; died at 82 years old of congestive heart failure.
