The American lion, related to the Eurasian cave lion, was first discovered in California. It is endemic to North America and is one of the largest cats that ever existed, slightly larger than its predecessor, the cave lion, and about 25% larger than modern lions. Its head-body length was over 8 feet and it may have weighed over 900 pounds. Most of its remains have been found in the La Brea tar pits; however, since their numbers are small in comparison to other mammals, it is theorized that they were clever enough to avoid the tar pits. Humans may have been a major factor in their extinction, since their bones have been found in trash heaps of ancient American Indians.
