Despite its name, the saber-toothed tiger was not closely related to tigers or any modern felids. It was the heaviest naturally-occurring felid ever (only because the liger might outweigh it), weighing in at up to 880 lbs. It was an apex predator that hunted mastodons, ground sloths, bison, and other large mammals; its only competition was likely the American Lion and the dire wolf. Its famous fangs were up to nearly a foot long and its gape was 120 degrees, almost twice that of the modern lion--however, its bite strength was only about one third that of the modern lion.
