The woolly mammoth is one of the most well-studied extinct animals, both in behavior and in appearance, because of the excellent preservation of many of its specimens. Although the mammoth was well adapted to the most recent ice age, with a thick coat of hair, many individuals were frozen and later recovered with amazingly intact bodies. One calf even had food still preserved in her stomach. The DNA from one male specimen is thought to be so potent that an elephant-mammoth hybrid could be fostered from an elephant host mother, which could eventually lead to a new species of near-mammoth...which is AWESOME. SCIENCE!
