Despite its name, the red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is more easily identified by the red cap on its head than the small red streak on its belly. Common year-round in the southeastern United States, its diet consists of typical woodpecker fair, including a variety of insects, nuts, fruits, and miscellaneous odds and ends. Having adapted well to urbanized areas, the population remains stable to climbing, despite a slight dip in the early 20th century.
