The red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) can be found year-round in the southeastern United States, and may migrate slightly northward during breeding season. Overall population in decline, probably owing to loss of nesting sites. Among the most omnivorous woodpeckers, they may feed on a variety of insects, nuts, berries, and tree bark.
