The melancholy call of the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is a familiar sound year-round in most of the United States. Diet consists almost exclusively of seeds, with a very rare insect or snail as a supplement. Thrives in open forests, grasslands, or even suburbs, and can raise up to six broods of eggs per year, allowing the population to continue growing along with increased urbanization.
