Gladys Mae Brown (1930 - 2024) was born in Sutherland, Virginia. As a child, she worked on a small farm with her family. She received a a scholarship in high school to attend Virginia State College. She went on to earn a Bachelors and a Masters degree. she was the second black woman ever hired and one of only four black employees at the Naval Proving Ground. She programmed an IBM 7030 Stretch computer to deliver increasingly precise calculations for the shape of the Earth. This led to satellite geodesy and GPS, Global Positioning System.
