Kalpana Chawla (1962 – 2003) was the first Indian American to fly into space. Born in India, she later moved to the US to further her education. Kalpana first flew on a mission as a mission specialist and robotic arm operator. Later flying that same space shuttle, Columbia, her and her crew mates lost their lives on re-entry in 2003.
