Constance Baker Motley (1921 – 2005) was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Her parents immigrated from the Caribbeans. She became interested in black history and civil rights when she was 15. She became a major figure in the Civil Rights movement as she was the first African-American woman to argue a case before the US Supreme Court. appointed to the federal judiciary, serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
