The Thunder Moon is so named because it heralds the arrival of summer's thunderstorms. It typically rises in July, so hunting-heavy regions also give it the name Buck Moon (because stags are starting to grow in their antlers), while more agriculture-focused areas sometimes call it the Hay Moon (haying usually starts in mid-summer).
