One of the largest land carnivore in the world, the polar bear sits at the top of the food chain in the Arctic ecosystem. Polar bears have an important role in their ecosystem by providing food to other Arctic species through the remains of their prey (primarily ice-dependent seals). While also land animals, they are also marine mammals and spend much of their time on Arctic sea ice. Coming from the common brown bear, polar bears have evolved to be fully equipped to survive the extreme icy conditions of the Arctic. Their fur is thicker than other bears (even covering their feet for warmth and traction on ice), they have a thick layer of blubber that provides insulation and buoyancy, and their front paws are large, flat, and oar-like which makes them excellent swimmers. The greatest risks to polar bear populations are polar bear-human conflicts, unsustainable hunting, industrial impacts, and melting sea ice caps due to climate change.
