For the young man who used to be of good spirits, but after the hard war and losing his first love, has become dark and sad and brusque. Still a good-hearted man of honour, he returns to his broken-down family farm that has fallen into ill state since the death of his father. There he tenaciously re-opens an old mine and settles back into his hometown, despite the pain of his first love (who thought him dead) living in the same town and having married his cousin. With the help of Demelza, a girl with a hard past, he starts a good new life, and with her help, his broken heart is mended and his run down farm made a home again.
