Genmai Cha is a classic Japanese green tea, blended with toasted, popped rice. Originally created to stretch short supplies of tea, now enjoyed by tea lovers here and abroad. Warm and nutty taste, with a lovely savory quality. A hearty cup of tea that is easy to combine with food. Genmai Cha is a great solution for those seeking a substantial, but less astringent flavor from their cup.

AI Bot Summary
based on most popular reviews
Genmai cha, a distinctive Japanese green tea blended with toasted rice, receives high praise for its unique flavor profile. Reviews highlight the pleasant toasty and nutty aroma reminiscent of puffed rice cereal, which marries beautifully with the mild, savory green Sencha tea base. Descriptions of the tea's visual appeal, with vibrant green leaves intermixed with puffed rice and popcorn-like kernels, complement its comforting, slightly sweet taste. Lacking the typical grassiness and astringency of green teas, Genmai cha offers a rich, buttery, and savory experience. Often enjoyed without sweeteners, it pairs well with food and is cherished for its cozy, heartwarming qualities. Fans appreciate its lower caffeine content, making it a versatile choice throughout the day.

What an interesting savory tea! Smells just like buttered popcorn, and tastes not too far off too! I say not too far off, but trust me, not in a bad way. As stated, this is a savory tea, so be prepared for a not sweet experience, that said, I thought it was quite delicious with hints of roasted peanut (no peanuts are in this tea) along side that signature popcorn flavor. I imagine this would be a nice tea to pair with a bowl udon.

One of my favorite greens because it does not have a 'weedy' taste. More of a nutty flavor which is delicious, especially with sushi. It has the added advantage of being relatively inexpensive.

I've come to be very fond of this tea over time so I increased from 4 to 5 stars. The reason is the lack of bitterness; the popcorn, etc. really buffer the after taste and it's a lovely smooth tea with relatively little acridity (of course it has some, it is a green tea). I usually steep it approximately a minute and a half (the timer to the side of this review box won't let me do fractions); I don't know the exact temperature, but it's in the green tea area on my electric pot.

This is a favor for taking my mushroom supplements in the morning. I sweeten it with a liposomal hair supplement with an almond flavor!!

Tried this one out of curiosity, and while I enjoy the savory toasted rice flavor and will very gladly continue to drink it, I can't see it becoming one of my go-to teas. An interesting, unique tea experience, though!

Update: Turns out I lied. It has indeed become one of my go-to teas, and I yearned for it once it was gone. The toasted taste and aroma grew on me exponentially after my initial review.

Lore

Puffed rice is made by applying steam and high pressure to rice kernels, similar to how popcorn is made from corn. Popular in many Asian countries, it can be served in spicy, savory, or sweet dishes and is even offered to Hindu gods or goddesses in some regions. In the US, it is more commonly found in cereals like and candy bars. Today, most puffed rice is made using the "gun puffing" method, which was developed by American inventor Alexander P. Anderson, who first showcased his invention at the World's Fair in 1904.

How long have you been growing tea?
I was born and raised in Makihohara region, the Japan's No.1 green tea production area. I have been involved with green tea production for the past 38 years.
What got you started in the Tea industry?
My grandfather started green tea farming and production, and my father took over it and then myself. I am the third generation. Masudaen as a company has been doing green tea business for almost a century now.
Can you describe a typical day out in the field. How many hours would that be?
I walk around the green tea fields at 6AM every morning, and checking green tea bushes. During harvest season, I harvest tea leaves with young staff, and do the processing also. Freshness is the most crucial thing for green tea. So, our factory is moving 24 hours a day during the harvest season. The harvested tea leaves becomes green tea (finished products) the next day.
