Sinclair Lewis's character Elmer Gantry is a fast-talking traveling salesman who finds religion at a tent meeting. He falls in love with Sister Sharon Falconer before going on the road with her. The reader discovers Gantry's hypocritical secret life, filled with excesses and all the things he tells the crowds to avoid. He loses Sharon in a fire at the tabernacle she dreamed of building.
