Da Hong Pao is an oolong tea from the WuYi Mountains in the Fujian province of China. It grows defiantly in the gaps of the mountain boulders, which endow it with the highly prized 'yan yun' or mineral 'rock taste.' Our premium-grade Wuyi Da Hong Pao offers rich aromas of roasted vegetables, sweet honey, and wet stones. The liquor is equally intriguing, colored as warm peach brandy. Delicately spicy, robust and rounded texture, with pit-fruit flavors and subtle ripe peach juiciness. A truly thought-provoking cup. Harvest: Summer 2022.

“ The consensus on Wuyi Da Hong Pao tea is highly positive, with most reviewers appreciating its rich, complex flavor profile that blends mineral, fruity, and smoky notes. Despite its pronounced "rock taste" that some found overpowering, the unique mineral and earthy tones delight many, likening it to a sensorial journey through its terroir. Its ability to undergo multiple steeps without losing character is praised, revealing different flavors with each session, from vegetal and floral to sweet peach and subtle spices. This tea's comforting warmth and ability to facilitate relaxation are highlighted, making it a favorite among oolong enthusiasts for its depth, complexity, and enjoyable drinking experience across various preparations. ”
“ OK, 'rock taste', yup now I definitely understand. When I ordered it, I was thinking this would be a subtle thing, like an old world wine with a taste of 'terrior' from where it was grown. Well that's exactly right except for the subtle part. This tea definitely tastes like a rock. It's also a complex and interesting cup with a slight smokiness, but the mineral flavors are very prominent. For me it was too much rock for my liking, although I am glad I tried the sample and have certainly learned from this tea. ”
“ This oolong was superb. I was able to enjoy multiple steeps with each steep showcasing different flavors. I also tried it chilled and it was refreshing. If you love oolong, put this one in your cart. Happy sipping! ”
“ This is a tea that on the first sip, I just took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and said 'mmmmmmmm'' Instant relaxation and enjoyment. Lovely tea with a wonderful mineral, earthy flavor. Some teas are worth the extra money -- this is one of them. So good. ”
Legends suggest that Da Hong Pao was named for the big red robe used to drape and protect the four special bushes that originally provided this particular Wuyi Mountain tea that miraculously cured the ill and led scholars to great triumph. We prefer to ignore the legends and concentrate on this tea's dark leaves, smoky character, and almost indefinable complexity on the palate: mineral, nuttiness, sesame, cinnamon. and burdock root. Its high-fire roasting process elicits an aftertaste redolent with sugar, like soft caramels melting in your mouth. Subsequent infusions reveal layer upon layer of pure satisfaction, a perfect digestif.
