I've never been one to watch tear jerking dramas but Netflix has me stuck on this Korean drama Move to Heaven based off essay book entitled "Things Left Behind" by Kim Sae-byul, a "trauma cleaner" 😭

I had to pause it because I couldn't read the subtitles through my blurry eyes

A, I love the way lace looks, too. I’ve watched it being made and it looks seriously beyond my skill set. People who make it are amazing.

Great visit at the nursing home, took the grand children along with. Gals beat the guys at cribbage, twice. Grand daughter scored not one but 2 goals in her Soccer game. Perfect weather for me. I cannot find one minute of this day that I can complain about. Watching Martin Short stand in for Jimmy Kimmel. Steve Martin is cracking me up. Grad Party tomorrow after I push mow the lawn. I don't know where I find the strength for these extra long busy days.

Up early (or late, depending on how you look at it) baking oatmeal raisin cookies. My son asked if I could make some yesterday but I accidentally fell asleep....so when I finally woke up, got to baking. :) nothing like baking cookies at 1:30 in the morning. :) GusGus was really hoping I would drop something. But was careful not to because doggos can't have raisins. Got out my oldest bottle of homemade vanilla...it smells so good!! Vanilla beans soaking in dark rum from Barbados for more than 5 years. Still have about 2/3 of the bottle. I'm stingy with it. ha ha. :) I have 3 other bottles as well....the bottle of Kraken has been soaking for about 2.5 years. Reminds me that this fall I need to start a new bottle :) I have a mix of beans from Indonesia and Madagascar. :) It's a long process....but so worth it. Real vanilla is just lovely. Smells so good!! But it's a lesson in patience. :)

My DIL, Tanya G got me started making my own vanilla about 6 years ago.... She now makes her own vanilla paste which is out of this world! Love that girl!

I can't have the sugar used to thicken the paste, so I just make the old fashioned sort. :) I know many who love the paste though! And, it's faster! :) My son loves teasing me about my stash of rum bottles in the cabinet. :) Just dawned on me to add making vanilla to the list of cooking skills I'm teaching him. When I start my new bottle, I will get enough beans and two bottles and we can start one for Josh. Then when he gets his own place, he can take his bottle with him. :)

I have a pretty significant amount of Kraken in a bottle left here. How Many beans do you drop in a bottle? Do you prep them?

Oatmeal cookies sound delicious! I may have to make some cookies for the 4th of July. I have a few big bottles of homemade vanilla extract and I can use some of that. I started making vanilla extract and vanilla paste when I was baking a lot. I don't bake so much now that my husband and I are on a sugar-free diet.

It's easy...just takes time. The right alcohol is very important....Proof between 70 and 80 is the sweet spot, but don't go over 95 proof or it dries out the beans. I like to use 80 proof, so I adjust the proof of my fav 70 proof spiced rums by adding just a touch of vodka to up the whole bottle to 80 proof. Make sure the beans are completely immersed in alcohol and put the bottle away in a cabinet or pantry out of sunlight. Give it a shake once in awhile...and over time, it works its magic all on its own. Just my personal preference....but the aged vanilla without added sugar is my flavor preference as I can't have the sugar they use to thicken vanilla pastes. The paste does allow for making vanilla faster using fewer beans by making a syrup/paste out of the them with a blender and adding sugar, alcohol and a couple other ingredients (the alcohol makes the paste more shelf stable). Lots of recipes online for vanilla paste! I use sugar alternatives in my baking (stevia mostly) so this method does not work for me. You can also crack open the beans and use the lovely vanilla caviar inside to create desserts/baked goods/coffee creamers, etc....vanilla flavor out of this world. You can split a bean, scrape out the caviar, and then put the remains of the bean into sugar to make vanilla sugar (works in salt too). I have some vanilla cinnamon and cacoa powder I made to add to my coffee! :) There are tons of online sites with great directions for how to do all sorts of things with vanilla beans and where to buy them, etc! It's easy and the taste is amazing!

I’ve been tempted to buy some vanilla beans here from selefina. Have never used the whole beans.

I also like to scrape the caviar out of the vanilla beans and put the caviar in a jar with sea salt flakes and let it sit for a few weeks then use it.

How fun! We went to our small town city pool yesterday. We get there when it opens at noon and spend about an hour walking and swimming back and forth. It's a nice refreshing break in the day.

The tea of the day (I don't have the monthly box) sounds refreshing. My son is still having problems with his AC...not good. He is meeting with his AC company this afternoon to get a quote on a new unit. It sounds like he will definitely need to replace his old unit soon. I hope you are all keeping cool.

Morning all! Planning to make yakitori today, so I had to clean out the smoker. Nasty job, but the food will be worth it!

We are renting a pontoon boat this afternoon. It's supposed to be a good day for that, warm but no rain. It is muggy though. I just put a pitcher of blackberry sage tea in the fridge to cold brew.

I just received a 3 oz bag of Berry Blast tea from a mystery gifter for my birthday. Whomever you are, thank you so much! I can't wait to make some yummy iced tea!!

We just got a wee bit of rain. At least this year we have been getting afternoon showers. Hopefully that will keep us from getting tumbleweeds with all this heat. The tropics are ramping up. I am a nervous Nelly. Nothing heading for us at the moment...but, you never know. My son has to get a new HVAC. Will be a couple weeks. It is 86 in his house at the moment with 80+% humidity. A friend brought over a portable unit and the AC company brought over two more so at least he will get a bit of relief. It is going to get tricky because he can't leave the portables running while he is at work and doesn't want his pup to get too warm. He is possibly going to board her on Monday and Tuesday and then work from home on Wednesday. He will be off from Thursday through Sunday. He got some DampRid to help reduce the humidity. Challenging times.

Tried to get some of my mojo back today by hanging out with some friends. It was absolutely a good time.

Sadly, my smoker seems to be broken. I let it run for a solid 30 minutes and it didn't heat up at all. Sad face. But at least the yakitori was still tasty on the stove top
